A standard 2x4 rental covers this entire route. Sossusvlei's final 5km sand track is shuttle-only anyway, and the roads to Sesriem and Swakopmund are tarred or well-graded gravel throughout.

First-time visitors with a week or less who want a real taste of desert and coast, and can live without a dedicated wildlife stop.
Day by day
Land in Windhoek, collect your rental car (a 2x4 is all this route needs), and overnight in the capital. One good dinner and an early night beats pushing straight out to the desert on jet lag.

Drive to Swakopmund (~4–5 hours via Solitaire and the Kuiseb Pass). Two nights on the coast: pick one real activity (sandboarding on the dunes just outside town, or a Walvis Bay boat trip for the flamingo lagoon) and eat well. This is the best food and coffee of the whole trip.

Is 7 days enough for Namibia?
Enough for a genuine taste of the desert and coast, not enough to add a proper wildlife stop. Etosha alone deserves 3–4 nights, which this itinerary doesn't have room for. Treat this as the short version, not the compromise version.
Do I need a 4x4 for this route?
No. Everything on this loop (Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund) is reachable on tarred or well-graded gravel roads in a standard 2x4, and Sossusvlei's soft-sand final stretch is shuttle-only regardless of what you're driving.
Can I fit Etosha into a 7-day trip?
Only by cutting Swakopmund to one night, and even then it's tight. If wildlife matters to you, the 10-day itinerary is the shorter route that actually has room for it properly.
How much total driving does the 7-day route involve?
Around 13 hours spread across three legs: roughly 5 hours from Windhoek to Sossusvlei, 4–5 hours on to Swakopmund, and 4 hours back to Windhoek (or a flight out of Walvis Bay instead of that last leg). It's less driving than the longer itineraries, which is part of the trade-off for skipping a dedicated wildlife stop.
